DESCRIPTION:
A perennial herbaceous liana of the Pumpkin family, originating from Southern China and Northern Thailand, cultivated, most often, because of its fruits. Other names: monk fruit, or Buddha fruit.
The liana grows from 3 to 5 m in length, twining with the help of its tendrils other plants. The leaves are narrow, heart-shaped, 10-20 cm long.
The fruit is spherical, 5-7 cm in diameter, smooth, yellow-brown or green-brown, with stripes running from the end of the peduncle. It is covered with a hard thin skin with fine hairs.
The darker the fruit, the sweeter it is. In fully mature fruits, the pulp becomes dry. The taste of arhat resembles melon.
