Cinchona Bark is very popular for making Homemade Tonic Water. Homemade tonic water is desired because consumers do not want the corn syrup added into commercial brands. Tonic water is a carbonated soft drink in which quinine is dissolved. It is consumed for its distinctive bitter flavor, often used in mixed drinks, particularly in gin and tonic. There are many recipes available on the internet and in books.
The bark contains alkaloids, including quinine and quinidine. Cinchona is the only economically practical source of quinine.
Quinine has been used for the treatment of malaria and associated febrile states, leg cramps caused by vascular spasm, internal hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and other issues.
Classical doses of the crude bark were approximately 1 gram.
Cinchona bark, also known as Jesuit's Bark, as Peruvian Bark, and as China Bark, is a former name of the most celebrated specific remedy for all forms of malaria, as it contains quinine. Other terms referring to this preparation and its source were "Jesuit's Tree", "Jesuit's Powder" and "Pulvis Patrum".
