  • Condition: This is a set of original Ives Black Diamond cars from 1929. The Observation and Combo (#'s 241 & 243) are really quite nice, C7, while the 242 Parlor car is probably a C6. If an upgraded roof for the 242 could be obtained, the set would be quite superior. In any case, it is far better then most of the Black Diamond sets that are out there!

    Description

ORIGINAL 1929 IVES “BLACK DIAMOND” SET OF CARS,
    #’s 241, 242, 243
Ives “Black Diamond” cars are among the most highly sought after and rarest of the so-called “Transition Period” from 1928-1932. In 1928, Ives was ready to introduce their new “Crack” Passenger Train, “The Candidate Special”. It was to be finished with dull black sides and brilliant red roofs. For the purpose of display, the then new 1134R was to be finished in a Bright Nickel plate. Unfortunately, only prototypes of these cars were produced as on July 31, 1928 Lionel and American Flyer acquired ownership of the company!
Apparently, the notion of producing these spectacular cars was implemented using standard production American Flyer President Special type cars. The set was offered in 1928-29.
This Set of three 1929 Cars consisting of a #241 Combo, #242 Parlor car and a #243 Observation are in much better condition than most of the Black Diamond cars that show up here or at the auctions. The 241 and 243 are really in quite good condition (C7) while the 242 Parlor car shows the most wear coming in at a C6. Original Black Diamond cars rarely ever show up on EBay or the train auctions and especially in an un-molested condition! This is a unique opportunity to acquire an original, non-touched up set of original Black Diamond cars!
See my other listing for an extra #241 Black Diamond Club Car. You could combine that car with these  three thus creating a four car set, even though you would have two Club Cars.
